Vaikunda Ekadasi is an important Ekadasi observance that falls on the ˜Ekadasi (11th day) of the Shukla Paksha (the waxing phase of moon) in the month of Dhanu in Malayalam calendar. Vaikuntha Ekadashi fasting is an important aspect of those associated with it. People fast the whole day and keep vigil. Special prayers are offered to Vishnu and devotees engage in Japa (chanting of Vishnu's name) and Dhyana (Meditation). On 'Dashami', the previous day of the observance, devotees who take up Vaikuntha Ekadashi fasting are to take only lunch. On Ekadashi, the next day, they have to maintain a complete fast and engage in prayers and meditation of Vishnu and hey are strictly prohibited in taking rice. That night, people keep vigil the whole night and visit the temple of Vishnu, mostly in the wee hours of the morning. This date corresponds to the months of December or January.

Arattu procession starts at about 6.30 pm and comes out from the Eastern Gopuram . The procession moves along south lane and turns towards Western Gopuram. It goes round Rudratheertham (holy water tank) for abhishekam with tender coconut water which is brought by the Kittai of Thampuran Patikkal. The tantri takes a dip with the silver utsava-vigraha in the Rudratheertham and soon after that thousands of people also take a holy dip in it. Again the utsava-vigraha mounts on elephant and it enters Kizhakke Gopuram and Ottapradikshinam (running circumambulation) takes place. The rounds run are seven on kodiyettam day, nine on the pallivetta and eleven on the Arattu day.

According to the age-old belief of Malayalees, an auspicious kani at dawn on the Vishu day is lucky for the entire year. Durga Devi, the divine mother, mounted on a lion, fought the mighty demon for nine days and killed him on the tenth day. Vijaya Dashami commemorates this victory of Mother Durga over the demon Mahishasura.

On the tongue of the child the letters "Hari Sri Ganapataye Namah Avignamastu" and all the alphabets are written with a piece of gold. The child is made to write the same letters from "Hari Sri" onwards with its ring finger on raw rice in a bell metal vessel and the child is made to utter each word when it is written. For this Brahma took the form of a swan and Vishnu took the form of a boar. Finally when none of them won, Lord Shiva emerged back into form and thus emphasized about the infiniteness and ultimate existence of God that is beyond all measurements.

Sriman Narayaneeyam is an immortal devotional hymn in Sanskrit extolling the glory of Lord Krishna, the presiding deity of Guruvayur temple in Kerala. It is a study in poetic form of the Bhagavata Purana by Veda Vyasa and was composed by Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri, who was born around1560 in Tirunavaya in Kerala. The Bhagavata Purana is a Hindu scripture comprising of 18,000 verses mainly devoted to the worship of Lord Krishna. Narayaneeyam condenses the Bhagavata Purana into 1034 verses, divided into 100 dasakas (cantos) and each dasaka consisting of approximately 10 slokas. Melpathur composed Narayaneeyam at the age of 27. He was an erudite scholar, poet and Vedantin. The literary beauty, devotional content and the Vedantic insight of this literary piece is unique.
